FAQS about learning to dance salsa

  • I've never danced before, will I be OK?

    Absolutely.

Our beginners salsa classes are designed specifically for people with little or no dance experience. Most people joining the course have never taken salsa lessons before.

We start with the fundamentals and build up gradually over four weeks. You'll learn alongside other beginners, so everyone is progressing at a similar pace.

Our teachers and assistants are there to support you every step of the way.

  • I'm nervous about coming on my own. Will I feel out of place?

    Not at all.

Many people join our beginners salsa lessons on their own and are surprised by how quickly they feel comfortable.

Because we rotate partners during the class, you'll quickly get to know other students and won't be left standing on the sidelines. Many of our dancers arrive knowing nobody and leave having made new friends as well as learned a new skill. Our existing dancers are also very welcoming of beginners.

  • Do I need to have a partner?

No. You do not need to bring a partner to our beginners salsa lessons.

We rotate partners throughout the class to improve your leading and following technique and to help you get to know your fellow students. Many people come on their own and quickly become part of the group.

  • Why choose a structured beginners salsa course instead of drop-in salsa classes?

Many salsa schools teach beginners through weekly drop-in classes where different people join each week and the content changes regularly.

At Sweetlead Salsa, our beginners learn through a structured four-week course. This means you'll learn alongside the same group of students, with each week building on the previous one.

This approach helps students develop stronger foundations, make faster progress and feel more confident on the dance floor.

Because students book onto the course in advance, we can also work towards maintaining as balanced a ratio of leaders and followers as possible. This generally means less waiting around for a partner and more time actually dancing and learning.

For many people looking to learn salsa in North London, this structured approach provides a more enjoyable and effective learning experience than starting with drop-in classes.

You can book your beginners course here.

  • Do I need to book?

If you are a beginner. Yes.

We run our beginners salsa classes as a 4-week progressive course, so if you are a beginner, then yes, you will need to book in advance. You can book your beginners course here.

One of the advantages of booking ahead is that we can monitor registrations and aim to maintain as balanced a ratio of leaders and followers as possible. This helps create a better learning environment and reduces the amount of time students spend waiting for a partner.

If you are not a beginner, the rest of our class levels are run as drop-in sessions and there is no need to book – you can simply turn up and join the class.

  • What happens if I miss one of the classes?

Life happens and we understand that sometimes people can't attend every week.

While we encourage students to attend all four weeks to get the maximum benefit from the course, missing a class doesn't mean you'll be completely lost.

If you only miss one week and can arrive around 15 minutes early for the following class, we'll usually be able to help you catch up on the key points before the lesson begins so you can continue learning with the rest of the group.

  • What will I be able to do by the end of the course?

By the end of the four weeks you'll understand the basic salsa timing, be able to dance with a variety of partners, and have learned a number of fundamental turns, combinations and leading and following skills.

Most importantly, you'll have the confidence to get out on the dance floor and enjoy social dancing rather than standing on the sidelines wondering what to do.

  • What happens after the beginners course?

Everyone progresses at a different rate.

Many students, particularly leaders, choose to repeat the beginners course at least once. Repeating the course allows you to reinforce the fundamentals, improve your confidence and develop stronger leading and following skills before progressing to the next level.

Once you can comfortably execute the beginners syllabus to the required standard, you'll be ready to progress into our improvers drop-in classes and continue developing your dancing on a pay-as-you-go basis.

Many students also start attending our social events, where they can practise what they've learned, meet other dancers and become part of the local salsa community.

  • Can I stay with my own partner throughout the class?

Yes. We won't force anyone to rotate partners if they are uncomfortable doing so.

However, partner rotation is one of the most effective ways to learn salsa in a group class. Dancing with different people helps leaders improve their lead, followers improve their following, and both partners develop skills that work with a wide variety of dancers rather than just one person.

If you would prefer to stay with your own partner throughout the class, please speak to your teacher before the course starts and we'll discuss the best option for you.

  • What age group is salsa suitable for?

Any age. From 16 to 100! If you can move, you can dance salsa.

One of the wonderful things about salsa is that it attracts people from all walks of life. At our North London salsa school we regularly teach people in their 20s, 30s, 40s, 50s, 60s and beyond.

  • What style of salsa do you teach?

In our weekly salsa classes we teach Cross Body Salsa On1, which is one of the most widely danced salsa styles in London and many other parts of the world.

However, our social events attract dancers of all styles, including Cuban Salsa, Salsa On2 and more.

If you'd like to know more about the different salsa styles, you can read more here.

  • Do I need to wear special shoes?

No. You just need a comfortable shoe, ideally with a smooth sole. You should avoid trainers or shoes with a lot of grip, as they can make turning and pivoting more difficult.

As you become more experienced you may choose to invest in dance shoes, but they are certainly not essential when you are learning salsa as a beginner.

  • What type of clothes shall I wear?

Comfortable and cool clothing is best as you will be moving around and getting a bit of exercise.

There's no dress code for our beginners salsa classes. Just wear something you feel comfortable moving in.

  • Is salsa good exercise

Yes. Salsa is a fantastic way to stay active without feeling like you're exercising.

A typical class involves movement, coordination and plenty of steps, helping improve fitness, balance and confidence while having fun. Many people find salsa a much more enjoyable way to stay active than going to the gym.
